
Emery Denis started Denis Insurance Agency in 1948. Robert Denis joined his father in 1955. In 1972 William G. Ricker joined the agency as a 50% owner along with Robert Denis. Emery Denis retired that same year and William and Robert became equal owners. In 1973 the name of the agency was changed to Denis and Ricker Insurance, Inc. Michael Demasi joined the agency in 1978. Later that year Denis and Ricker Insurance purchased the Salman Agency in Northfield and Mike DeMasi was placed in charge of the new agency. In February of 1980 Robert Denis died suddenly from a massive heart attack. As a result, Ricker became the sole owner of Denis and Ricker and Mike Demasi and Bill Ricker became equal owners of the Salman Agency. The name of the Northfield agency was changed to Demasi and Ricker. Late in 1980 George Gillander joined Denis and Ricker and became a minority stockholder.
In February, 1983, Denis and Ricker, Inc. purchased the Brown Insurance Agency in Montpelier. The Brown Agency had a slightly larger premium volume at that time. The name of the agency was changed to Denis, Ricker and Brown. The Brown Agency dated back to 1865 in Montpelier. During its tenure it purchased many small agencies. At the time it was purchased by Denis and Ricker it was owned by John Hudson and John Donnelly. The agency had been owned by someone in the Hudson family since the 1940's. Both Hudson and Donnelly retired at the time of the purchase.
In 1987 Brian Aitchison joined the agency. Brian is the grandson of the late Emery Denis. In April of 1988, Demasi and Ricker Inc. became a branch office of Denis, Ricker and Brown and Mike Demasi became an officer and minority stockholder. At the same time Denis, Ricker & Brown purchased two agencies in Lyndonville - The Hopkins Agency and The Reynolds Agency. The agencies were combined into one office and the new branch was named Hopkins and Reynolds.
In January, 1993 Denis, Ricker & Brown purchased controlling interest in Mason and Fuller in Waterbury. Bruce Holland, the owner of Mason and Fuller remained with the agency and continued to run the Waterbury office.
In October of 1993, Peter Ricker, son of Bill Ricker, joined Denis, Ricker & Brown.
In April of 2000, Bill Ricker, Mike Demasi, George Gillander, Bruce Holland and John Hogenboom sold their stock in Denis, Ricker and Brown. A new Denis, Ricker & Brown was formed with Peter Ricker and Brian Aitchison as minority stockholders. The other stockholders were the owners of Hickok & Boardman, Inc of Burlington.
In April of 2001 Bill Ricker retired from Denis, Ricker & Brown after being general manager for one year under the new ownership.
